How to Take Charge of Your Personal Development

Broaden your network

  • It’s not what you know, it’s not who you know but who knows you! The best business opportunities come from referrals.
  • Join a local board, sporting club or committee to meet new people.
  • Develop meaningful working relationships  with key players within your organisation/industry.

Plan for self improvement

  • Increase your knowledge through taking advantage of training opportunities, become qualified in an area that excites and interests you and read books, policies etc in the area that you enjoy learning about.
  • Remember to apply the knowledge gained.
  • Identify the ‘pain’ in your organisation and how you are uniquely suited to help calm that pain from your current position.
  • Looks for ways you can improve the performance of your department.

Develop a relationship with a mentor

  • Choose someone with more experience, knowledge and /or contacts.
  • Seek their advice, brainstorm ideas and emulate their positive behaviours.
  • Schedule regular sessions with your mentor.
