How to Be an Effective Leader

Be result oriented

  • Share the department or organisational vision.
  • Define the results you and the team need to achieve the vision.
  • Track the progress made to ensure that the targets are being met.

Promote accountability

  • Hold 1 to 1 meetings, to agree the targets your team members must meet
  • Agree on what success looks like, and gain their commitment to deliver on time
  • Agree on how and when you will get feedback eg. via email, meetings, daily,  weekly etc.
  • Request that staff spot opportunities for improvement

Develop and motivate your staff

  • Identify  team members’ training and development needs, and align this with your department and organisational objectives.
  • Ensure each team member is placed in a role that  is aligned to their strengths
  • Show appreciation for a job well done both publicly and privately
