Become a subject matter expert

  • Decide on an area that you are passionate about
  • Seek work experience in this area, either in the work place or in a voluntary capacity
  • Be up to date on the subject e.g. subscribe to journals; attend seminars; find a mentor in this area

Practice demonstrating the right behaviours

  • Be creditable
  • Have integrity
  • Demonstrate a passion for developing others’ potential

Develop a strong network

  • Join a professional or charitable association and be an active  member – e.g. attend committee meetings
  • Attend networking events and make at least 3 new connections
  • Ensure that you follow up with the connections you have made and find ways to continue the relationship
