How to Improve Your Time Management

Be focused on outcomes not tasks

  • Start with the end in mind – what do you want to achieve at the end.
  • Focus on objectives (e.g. marketing plan sent to Managing Director), not on activities (e.g. discuss marketing strategies).
  • Ensure that each activity to be taken is a required step to achieve your outcome…”Will this action get me closer to my outcome?”

Plan your day before it starts

  • Create a list of monthly outcomes in service of your  annual goals/objectives.
  • Create a list of weekly outcomes.
  • The night before, create your daily plan, incorporating any new actions that you may have accepted.

Discipline yourself throughout the day

  • Resist impulses to do unscheduled tasks.
  • Work for a focused uninterrupted 90 minutes then take a half hour break to make calls, read etc.
  • Schedule a duration and specific timeslots to review emails during the day. If you can address the email in 2 minutes then do it, if not schedule to complete it for another time, so it does not get lost.
