Position Objective:
The role and function of the position includes but is not limited to the following:-
The Health, Safety and Environment Officer will support the ongoing development and maintenance of activities within the HSE Department. He will be responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of HSE policies/procedures and Records Management.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Ensure that the Company’s policies are in compliance with the statutory legislative framework on safety and health requirements of Trinidad and Tobago.
- Conduct annual risk assessments of universal jobs that are performed across the various locations of the Company and conduct risk assessments for specific or new activities which have the potential for safety and health implications on a short term, middle term or long term nature.
- Devise safety and health checklists so that precise dates and subject matters can be recorded for future reference with regards to the record keeping mandate contained in the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
- Co-ordinate renewal of licence for forklift operators, Class 4 and 5 drivers.
- Co-ordinate certification of weight-bearing capacity of shelves and any welding done on those shelves.
- Conduct walkabouts with front line supervisors and communicate findings. Inspecting work equipment and processes to make sure they are safe.
- Ensure that the workplaces are capable of practicing safety behavior which would prevent the spread of COVID-19 and any variants of that virus.
- Engage in communication with any representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Agency and the Public Health Authorities over issues which fall within their respective competencies.
- Systematically follow up and track actions taken by the HSE department.
- Form and lead the Company’s Emergency Response Team and assist with coordinating drills.
- Notify Senior Management of Safety and Environmental issues where conditions or practices may cause injury, illness, property damage or environmental impact
- Conduct Incident Investigations with root cause analysis investigation. Provide summary reports on verification progress, findings and status on closeout of improvement actions.
- Provide administrative support in all HSE training and safety awareness programmes.
- Work with Senior Management and Supervisors in developing a safety culture.
- Devise a system to orient and transition all employees into the culture of health and safety at the workplace.
- Train and coach employees enabling them to implement and apply continuous improvement for effectiveness of Company's HSE Program.
- Review and report on the staff's compliance with health and safety rules and recommend commendations or disciplinary measures/dismissal based on performance.
- Ensure availability of first aid equipment and supplies/assigned first aiders.
- Perform all other related job functions as required and as deemed necessary.
Knowledge, Experience and Key Competencies:
- At least an Associate Degree in Occupational Safety and Health
- Knowledge of the Occupational Safety & Health Act and other relevant legislation and best practices
- A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in the field
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Highly organized with strong coordinating and multi-tasking skills
- Able to adhere to deadlines for assigned tasks
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff in the organization
