ob Summary

The Accountant will be responsible for managing and maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, monitoring income and expenses, and ensuring that the company’s accounting activities are completed accurately and on time. The successful candidate will assist with budgeting, reconciliations, statutory compliance, payroll-related accounting, and financial analysis while ensuring adherence to applicable accounting standards and company policies.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounting records and financial documentation.
  2. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  3. Prepare and maintain general ledger accounts and supporting schedules.
  4. Perform bank, credit card, accounts payable, and accounts receivable reconciliations.
  5. Process accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoices, receipts, payments, and journal entries.
  6. Monitor outstanding receivables and follow up on overdue accounts.
  7. Assist with the preparation and monitoring of company budgets and cash-flow forecasts.
  8. Analyze financial information and prepare variance reports for management.
  9. Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  10. Prepare financial statements and management reports.
  11. Ensure accounting records are maintained in accordance with applicable accounting standards, including IFRS where applicable.
  12. Assist with the preparation and submission of statutory obligations, including VAT and other applicable taxes and statutory payments.
  13. Maintain proper records for audits and liaise with external auditors when required.
  14. Assist with payroll accounting, statutory deductions, and related financial records where required.
  15. Monitor company expenses and ensure proper authorization and supporting documentation.
  16. Maintain the fixed asset register and assist with depreciation calculations.
  17. Identify discrepancies, errors, and unusual transactions and recommend corrective action.
  18. Maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information.
  19. Ensure compliance with internal financial controls, policies, and procedures.
  20. Provide financial information and reports to management as required.
  21. Perform other accounting and financial duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field OR relevant professional accounting qualification.
  2. ACCA qualification or active pursuit of ACCA is highly desirable. For many accounting roles in Trinidad & Tobago, employers commonly request ACCA Level II/III or a related degree, depending on the level of the position.
  3. Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in accounting, finance, or a related position; more experience may be required for a senior Accountant role.
  4. Knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  5. Working knowledge of IFRS and applicable accounting practices.
  6. Knowledge of Trinidad & Tobago statutory and tax requirements, including VAT, PAYE, NIS, and other applicable obligations, would be an asset.
  7. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
  8. Experience with computerized accounting software such as Sage/Peachtree, QuickBooks, Oracle, or similar systems is an asset.
  9. Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
