The Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (Desalcott) maintains its position as the largest operating desalination facility in the Western Hemisphere. The plant produces and supplies potable water to the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) at the current operating capacity of 40MIGD (million imperial gallons per day).

Desalcott is currently seeking to recruit a dynamic, suitably qualified Mechanical Technician to join our growing team.

JOB DESCRIPTION- MECHANICAL TECHNICIAN
Job Summary: 

The Mechanical Technician will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of all rotating and static equipment on site. The role requires hands-on expertise, to ensure the reliable operation of equipment such as: pumps, compressors, valves and piping systems critical to the plant operations.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Maintenance and Repair

o Perform routine and preventive maintenance on rotating equipment such as high-pressure pumps, vertical centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, motors and compressors.

o Rebuilding of split axial and vertical pump bearing housings, gear-boxes and energy recovery turbines. 

o Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair static equipment such as valves and piping systems. Valves include, but not limited to: butterfly, ball and air release valves. 

o Conduct vibration analysis, alignment checks of various types and bearing replacements on rotating equipment.

o Knowledgeable on bearing fits and installation procedures on: pumps, motors and gearboxes.  

o Attend frequent visits at contractor shops to supervise repairs on major equipment such as: pumps, motors and to ensure repairs are being done in accordance with OEM and industry standards. Reporting of findings to the relevant supervisors is required. 

 

2. Installation and Commissioning:

o Installation and commissioning of new equipment, systems, as well as, ‘spare’ equipment. This will ensure accurate alignment with design specifications and industry standards.

o Verify and test mechanical systems post-installation to ensure functionality and safety.

o Installation of various static and ancillary equipment such as: butterfly valves, check valves, air/vacuum valves, air regulators, pressure reducing valves, vibration dampeners, chemical mixers.

o Practical knowledge of various forms of machine alignment such as: laser alignment.

 

3. Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

o Identify and diagnose mechanical faults.

o Collaborate with Engineers to diagnose root causes of equipment failures and implement corrective actions.

 

4. Compliance and Documentation:

o Adhere to safety and environmental regulations, including proper use of PPE and compliance with plant safety protocols.

o Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment performance and spare parts usage.

 

5. Team Collaboration:

o Work closely with the operations team to minimize downtime and ensure efficient equipment performance.

o Support cross-functional teams during plant shutdowns, turn-arounds and emergencies.

o Assist the senior mechanical team with training and mentoring of junior technicians and trainee engineers.

 

6. Continuous Improvement:

o Provide continuous feedback on equipment reliability and performance to contribute to ongoing improvement initiatives.

o Participate in training programs as and when required, to stay updated on the latest technologies and techniques in mechanical maintenance.

 

Qualifications:

1. Education: Diploma or Technical certification in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field.

 

2. Experience: Minimum of   five (5) years’ experience in maintenance and repair of rotating and static equipment, preferably in a desalination plant or similar process industry. Experienced in the installation, maintenance and repairs of vertical turbine, high pressure centrifugal, positive displacement pumps, and valves. 

 

3. Technical Skills:

o Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical equipment.

o Microsoft office proficient. 

o Knowledge of alignment techniques, vibration analysis, and condition monitoring tools.

o Familiarity with materials, welding techniques, and corrosion protection methods.

o Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and technical manuals.

 

4. Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a plant environment, including confined spaces and elevated areas.
  • Willingness to work on shifts, on - call and respond to emergencies outside regular working hours inclusive or weekends and public holidays.
