Job Title: SENIOR INTERNAL AUDITOR
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Direct Reports: Internal Auditor
Works closely with:  All Department Heads 
Unit:  FINANCE AND INVESTMENTS DEPARTMENT 

Job Summary 
The Senior Internal oversees the internal audit function and guide the Internal Auditor in assessing the company’s internal controls, compliance, and risk management processes. This role involves managing the audit cycle, performing risk assessments, and presenting audit findings to the Audit and Risk Compliance Committee (ARCC). 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Audit Planning and Execution 

1. Conducts a risk assessment to identify areas that could impact the Company’s objectives, including operational, financial, compliance, and strategic risks.  

2. Develops a comprehensive, risk-based internal audit plan, prioritizing high-risk areas requiring oversight. 

3. Define clear objectives, scope, and timelines for each audit engagement, adhering to IIA standards. 

4. Conduct high-risk audits including evaluating financial, operational, and compliance controls, to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of risk management processes and internal controls and oversee the work of the Internal Auditor. 

Analysis and Reporting 

5. Analyze audit findings, identifying deficiencies, risks, and areas for improvement. 

6. Prepare detailed audit reports for presentation to the Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committee (ARCC), summarizing key findings, associated risks, and practical recommendations for improvement. 

7. Keep senior management informed of any significant deficiencies identified during audits, providing actionable insights and solutions to address these issues. 

8. Communicate audit findings and recommendations to management, ensuring a clear understanding of risks and necessary corrective actions.

Follow-Up and Monitoring 

9. Monitor the implementation status of audit recommendations, following up with management to verify that corrective actions have been completed. 

10. Report on the status of outstanding issues to the ARCC, highlighting any significant delays or risks. 

Compliance and Professional Standards 

11. Ensure all audit activities are conducted in accordance with IIA standards, company policies, and the Code of Ethics. 

12. Stay updated on changes to industry regulations, IIA standards, and best practices to ensure compliance and continuous improvement within the audit function. 

13. Conduct an annual self-assessment or external assessment of the internal audit function's effectiveness in accordance with IIA standards. 

14. Evaluate and update the internal audit policies and procedures to reflect best practices and changes in regulatory requirements. 

Governance and Risk Advisory 

15. Serve as a trusted advisor to the ARCC, providing insights on risk management, governance, and internal control processes. 

16. Attend and participate in ARCC meetings, offering objective advice and input on emerging risks, audit findings, and compliance matters as needed. 

Mentorship and Supervision 

17. Supervises, coaches and mentors Internal Auditors, ensuring compliance with governance and quality requirements and adherence to professional standards, to achieve all key milestones and outcomes. 

18. Conduct performance evaluations for internal audit team members, providing feedback and identifying training needs, consistent with the Company’s Performance Management 

System and HR policies. 

19. Ensure ongoing professional development and training for the internal audit team, including attending relevant training, conferences, and certification programs. 

Other duties and responsibilities 

20. Prepares written, oral, and graphic reports, photographic and other media presentations. 

21. Complies fully with the Company’s policies and procedures and adheres to the Company’s Core Values and Code of Business Conduct by daily demonstration of associated behaviour. 

22. Performs additional duties related to the internal audit function as necessary, provided they align with the standards of independence and objectivity in auditing. 

 

Education and Job Experience 

1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or another related field; and 

2. Minimum 7 years’ experience in private or public accounting or auditing, with at least 5 years in a supervisory capacity. 

3. CIA certification will be considered an asset. 

4. Master’s degree in accounting will be considered an asset. 

Any other suitable combination of qualifications and experience may be considered. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

1. Strong knowledge of auditing standards, procedures, laws, rules, and regulations. 

2. Excellent mathematical and analytical skills. 

3. Advanced computer skills and working knowledge of auditing software. 

4. Meticulous attention to detail and a high level of accuracy. 

5. Ability to work with large amounts of complex financial data. 

6. Solid communication and leadership skills.
