JOB TITLE: Occupational Safety & Health Officer

REPORTS TO: Human Resource Manager        

DEPARTMENT: HSSE

SECTION: HSSE
 
Job Summary:
 The HSSE Officer is tasked with assisting in the implementing, monitoring, inspecting, and providing guidance on health, safety and environmental initiatives and activities. The incumbent would review and act in accordance with the Company's safety programme, policies and procedures. The position requires focus on ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety, social and environmental laws, assessing risk, and proposing strategies to minimize potential hazards or unhealthy situations within the workplace. This position is also responsible for performing administrative tasks and maintaining an organized filing system.
 
Core Responsibilities:
  • Assesses compliance with Health, Safety & Environmental policy and existing laws & regulations
  • Recommend ways to achieve ultimate goal of Zero Accidents
  • Attend Safety Committee meetings monthly, proposed meeting agenda and taking meeting minutes
  • Collaborate with departmental heads in implementing safety processes
  • Educate employees on safety through documentation
  • Continuous dissemination, monitoring and reviewing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Inspection of all work area premises for hazardous or unhealthy elements on a weekly basis
  • Coordinate routine safety inspections of fire equipment (fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, fire alarm systems) and panic alarm as well as servicing of the lift in compliance with OSHA regulations
  • Assist with the conduct of random workplace drug and alcohol testing with maintenance of accurate records
  • Properly maintain incident/accident reports
  • Ensure first aid treatment is provided immediately to injured employees
  • Ensures Emergency Drills are conducted by liaising with HRM
  • Strictly adhere to corporate safety guidelines and procedures
  • Ensures the timely and accurate preparation of HSE reports and metrics relevant to HSE
  • Ensures HSE signage is procured and strategically placed in keeping with OSH requirements
  • Performs any other duties that may be assigned from time to time
 
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Certificate/Diploma/Undergraduate Degree in the field of Occupational Safety, Health & Environment
  • Or NEBOSH
  • Relevant combination of qualification, training and experience will be considered

Core Competencies:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel & PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and Health legislation (OSH Act)
  • Accident investigations and report writing
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Good analytical and strategic thinking skills
  • Diligent and detailed oriented
  • Results and people oriented
