JOB PURPOSE:
The Environmental Specialist oversees the development and implementation of an Environmental Sustainability Strategy aimed at ensuring the effective implementation, embedding and maturing of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The jobholder will also be responsible for ensuring site compliance with all applicable HSE Legal and regulatory requirements. The position serves as a primary interface and negotiator with environmental regulatory agencies related to permits, compliance, communications and inspections. Additionally, the jobholder will ensure development and implementation of environmental policies, procedures, processes, training, standards and reporting (KPI’s) systems across the organization.
Additionally, the jobholder provides tactical support for the development, implementation and maintenance of programs that ensure that the Company continues to operate in the local community, based on the principles of sustainability.
The jobholder interacts across all functional groups in the Company in fulfilling the objectives of the role. He/she operates in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with frequently changing priorities. The jobholder must adapt to a dynamic environment with varied workloads, schedules, and deliverables. Extended hours may at times be required to complete deliverables. Work is conducted both in an office and in a plant environment.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Ensures the development and implementation of an Environmental Sustainability Strategy aimed at ensuring the effective implementation, embedding and maturing of the system to achieve and maintain the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard
• Drives the development and implementation of a suitable HSE Compliance Assurance Program to guarantee continued compliance with all applicable legal and other requirements.
• Develops a sustainable approach to the management of Environmental Performance both at the company and at a community scale to build sustainable relationships with the national community as part of the Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) principles.
• Recommends and develops environmental initiatives aimed at introducing sustainable environmental behavior to employees, contractors and service providers working for and on behalf of the Company.
• Develops sustainability -based programs that build awareness of sustainable environmental practices among stakeholders, inclusive of schools and the community.
• Develop and implement Waste Management Systems, and propose solutions to technical/operational problems to prevent or minimize generating waste and discharges
• Ensure proper application of assurance procedures to manage waste disposal facility use and mitigate future litigation or business risks to the Company

• Sound knowledge of and experience with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Environmental Management Authority Act, subsidiary legislation and other management systems (e.g. ISO 9000, ISO 14001, ISO 18001)

• Sound knowledge of Environmental Site Assessment and Environmental Sampling and Analysis; and task -based Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment process, training and assessment.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:
• A first degree in Natural Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Engineering or related discipline from a recognized, accredited institution.
• A minimum of seven (7) years’ work experience, five (5) of which should have involved management of HSSE issues within a Process Plant Operating environment or Oil and Gas Exploration and Production environment.
• Demonstrated experience in implementing or maintaining an Environmental Management System (ISO 14001).
• Experience in interpreting and advising on Regulations, HSSE Codes, Practices and Procedures and their application.
• Sound knowledge of Environmental Site Assessment and Environmental Sampling and Analysis; and task-based Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment process, training and assessment.
