The Company
Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU) manages a major fuel-efficient power plant in Trinidad and Tobago. The 720-megawatt (MW) TGU facility is a combined-cycle power plant which is owned by the National Investment Fund (NIF), the latter is a wholly owned entity of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago (GoRTT). 

The plant is located at the Union Industrial Estate, La Brea and supported by a Corporate Office in Chaguanas.

The ROLE - Plant Manager
As an executive, the role is tasked with overseeing day-to-day activities and improving performance of their respective functional areas, participating in directing organizational strategy, developing organizational culture and creating business plans.

The Plant Manager directs and manages all plant operations with overall responsibilities for Operations, Maintenance, Planning and Projects, Reliability and other plant management related activities. The Plant Manager is expected to direct the achievement of these outcomes in a safe, cost-effective, efficient, business-like and environmentally responsible manner. The position must consistently achieve its deliverables in accordance with TGU’s short, medium and long-term business objectives, policy guidelines, health, safety and environmental regulations, local and international statutory requirements and through the effective management of the equipment, material, financial and human resources.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Leading and directing plant management and operational activities and technical functions through the coordination of the Maintenance, Operations and Planning and Projects departments to ensure the safe, optimal, reliable and efficient plant operations.
  • Ensuring that all safety and environmental regulations and local and international statutory requirements are adhered to.
  • Ensuring contractual obligations as outlined in the company’s Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) are achieved, that is, Equivalent Availability (EA), Maximum Dependable Net Capacity (MDNC), Heat Rate etc.
  • Reviewing departmental staffing needs, shift configuration and skills and competencies required to meet current and planned production requirements and business targets.
  • Providing support in resolving plant performance issues through on-going consultations with department Team Leads, OEM’s and local and foreign consultants.
  • Maintaining existing company facilities and equipment; replacing or making adjustments to company facilities and equipment when necessary
  • Identifying areas of potential operational risk and developing plans for mitigating and eliminating those risks
  • Developing and implementing effective systems of control to manage department capital and operating expenditure within budget.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
• Post graduate qualifications in engineering and/or Management and Business Administration
• A minimum of 10 years’ experience in an industrial plant environment or similar environment, 8 years of which must be at a management level.
• Experience in a combined cycle power generating plant would be an asset.
• Significant experience in contract negotiations and management.
