Position Title: Health & Safety Officer

Department: Health, Safety & Security

Division: HR & Safety

Reports To: Health, Safety & Security Manager

Division Head: Senior Manager – Human Resources
 
POSITION SUMMARY
The Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for carrying out the responsibilities for planning, implementing and overseeing employees’ safety at work under the direction of the Health, Safety and Security Manager.

RESPONSIBILITES
  1. Assist the Health, Safety and Security Manager with the implementation and compliance of applicable OSHA programs, along with conducting new employee and contractor safety orientations.
  2. Attend daily power suite meetings for both the Converting & Mill Operations. 
  3. Perform Job Safety Analyses on specific jobs to minimize the risk of potential safety hazards.
  4. Assist in auditing elements of the safety program to ensure compliance. 
  5. Assist with the review of annual risk assessments.
  6. Support the HR Department in setting up the safety on-boarding process for all new employees. 
  7. Support investigations on the root causes of accidents and other unsafe conditions or behaviours on the job site and recommend preventative measures.
  8. Submit accident notifications to OSHA within the required time frames. 
  9. Monitor employee and contractor compliance with Company’s safety rules and regulations.
  10. Collect and analyze health and safety data; conduct research on specific issues. 
  11. Assist in coordinating interdepartmental health and safety activities. 
  12. Assist with establishing and monitoring worker exposure limits to health hazards. 
  13. Attend monthly Safety Leadership Team (Safety Committee) meetings.
  14. Execute all relevant responsibilities as outlined in the Roles, Responsibilities and Authorities Matrix (MT-GM-004) to ensure compliance with the Integrated Management System (IMS). 
  15. Perform any other related duties that may be assigned.

EDUCATION & TRAINING
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Management or any other related discipline from a recognized institution
  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (NEBOSH) or similar certification

EXPERIENCE
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a similar role
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment will be an asset
  • Working knowledge of local health and safety legislation and procedures
  • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
  • Experience with conducting data analysis and statistical reporting
