Description
Position Objectives:
The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Officer is the primary champion for a health and safety culture in the company. S/he ensures that the Company is compliant with legislation and advocates for safe practices throughout the organization.
Key Duties & Responsibilities include:
- Conduct walkabouts with front line managers and supervisors and communicate findings. Inspecting work equipment and processes to make sure they are safe.
- Periodically review relevant Company policies and protocols, and make recommendations to update to ensure that they are in compliance with local legislative framework and best practice
- Conduct annual and as-needed risk assessments of jobs that are performed across the organization and for specific or new activities which have safety and health implications
- Conduct Incident Investigations with root cause analysis investigation and provide summary reports on progress; findings and status updates on closeout of improvement actions
- Develop and implement safety and health checklists and other relevant record keeping tools
- Co-ordinate the certification of specialized work, such as welding of shelves with weight-bearing capacity
- Champion hygienic workplace behaviors to mitigate against/ stop the spread of infectious diseases
- Engage in pre-approved and authorized communication with any representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Agency and the Public Health Authorities over issues which fall within their respective competencies.
- Lead the Company’s Emergency Response Team and assist with coordinating drills.
- Notify Senior Management of Safety and Environmental issues where conditions or practices may cause injury, illness, property damage or environmental impact
- Take the lead in organizing HSE training and safety awareness programmes.
- Work with Senior Management, Supervisors and Staff in developing a safety culture.
- Train and coach employees enabling them to effectively play their part in achieving the Company’s HSE KPIs
- Review and report on the staff's compliance with health and safety rules
- Ensure availability of first aid equipment and supplies
- Perform all other related job functions as required and as deemed necessary.
Knowledge, Experience and Key Competencies:
- At least an Associate Degree in Occupational Safety and Health
- Knowledge of the Occupational Safety & Health Act and other relevant legislation and best practices
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the field
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Highly organized with strong coordinating and multi-tasking skills
- Able to adhere to deadlines for assigned tasks
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff in the organization
